About The Gardens in the Memories

As time goes by, the memories of the Gardens have been transformed into tangible existences via photography, preserved and disseminated. These old photographs may tell the changes in animals and plants, the development of landscapes, individual experiences and interactions among human beings, animals and plants.

The interpretations of these images might correspondingly change when we collect them. Through the act of collection, our unique personal experiences and memories were evolved and constructed as our collective memories. The images also provide different approaches for us to understand the Gardens, we can have our own interpretations when we read the old photographs, retrospect our childhood, and enrich the history and memory of the Gardens.

“The Gardens in the Memories” — Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens-Old Photos and Memories Collection Campaign includes old photo collection and online exhibition that exhibits the old images of the Gardens. The campaign is part of “Hi! Flora, Fauna”, a public art project presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, organised by the Art Promotion Office and in collaboration with Lumenvisum, the Curatorial Partner of Image Art in this project. About Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens

Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens is the oldest park in the territory. The Gardens is also nicknamed by the locals as “Bing Tau Fa Yuen” since it was the site of the government house during Hong Kong’s early development. The Governor also served as the commander-in-chief of Hong Kong. “Bing Tau” means the head of soldiers and “Fa Yuen” means a garden in Cantonese. The Gardens is located on the northern slope of the Victoria Peak. Since its establishment in the 1860s, the Gardens was ravaged by wars, reconstructed and restored afterwards, the historical trajectory through one and a half centuries has been sprinkled among the light and shadow in the gardens, scattered around plants and animals, buildings and cultural relics.
